The Danger of Laptop Leg Burns
The Danger of Laptop Leg Burns
(and how to avoid them)
After hearing from a trabasack user that they used a trabasack to prevent laptop leg burns from an overheating laptop, we decided to look into it further:
Although a laptop is designed to be used on your lap, there are many stories coming to light which show the dangers of placing your laptop directly on your bare skin. An aptly (if bizarrely) named skin condition called Toasted Skin Syndrome is the result of using a laptop for even a few hours on your lap. Evidence mainly from the US has shown children as young as 12 developing a mottled patterning to their legs developed from elongated usage of laptops which results in the transfer of infrared radiation through the skin!
There are more cases which show this dark mottling doesn’t fade and you’re left with permanent damage to your skin through the “toasting” of your thighs’ skin. It’s thought the temperature underneath a laptop can reach up to 52c which is dangerously high to have in contact with your skin for elongated periods of time. Although not often considered a serious condition, toasted skin syndrome can lead to permanent skin discolouration and in very rare cases even the development of melanomas and other skin cancers.
Here is a report on Toasted Skin Syndrome and laptop legs burns from ABC news:
